Stones of the Yarra Valley Wedding of Rhian and Ben

Tell me about the beginning!

For Ben and myself, it was love at first swipe. I had just moved to Ballarat for my first teaching job, so we met how all couples seem to meet these days, using online dating platforms.

From the first “in person” meet up, we both felt super comfortable around each other, a weird feeling with someone you have just met. In the early days of our relationship, we found out we shared lots of common interests, including Marvel movies and our love of dogs.

When and where did you get engaged?

I had originally planned to propose to Rhian on our trip to Hawaii. Leading up to our trip, Rhian dropped hints constantly about being married. I tried to throw her off the scent and told her that we would get engaged in Italy in 2023.

I had been seeing news articles about Qantas losing bags or sending them to the wrong location and started to freak out and was going to place the ring in my carry on luggage. Rhian and I then agreed to take one carry on suitcase and one backpack as our carry on. This was an issue as now I couldn’t place it in the carry on without Rhian accidentally finding it. I thought the best way to get the ring to Hawaii was on Rhian’s finger.

The night before I proposed to Rhian, we were laying in bed. I was listening to a podcast and Rhian was on her phone. I rolled over to see what Rhian was doing on her phone and saw that she was looking at seating plans for her wedding. I knew at this time that I needed to put Rhian out of her misery and allow her to plan an actual wedding, instead of the make believe one she was currently planning.

3 days out from their trip, Rhian left for the gym at 5am like she does most days, during this time I took the dogs for a walk and rushed home to prepare breakfast for myself and Rhian. When Rhian returned from the gym she went to jump into the shower, I called out to her before she could do that and got down on one knee and asked Rhian to marry me.
